Description

The bike tour begins with the meeting of participants and departure from Palermo, following a coastal route on an asphalt road (and bike path, where available). Our first stop is the Libero Grassi Park, located on the “mammellone,” an area with a history linked to the “Sack of Palermo.”

Continuing east, we reach the Ficarazzi waterfront and the seaside village of Aspra, where a visit to the Anchovy and Maritime Arts Museum is planned. Afterwards, we cycle towards Bagheria, famous for its 19th-century villas, including Villa Palagonia (known as the Villa of Monsters). In Bagheria, a tasting of Sfincione Bagherese is planned.

The itinerary continues towards the seaside village of Porticello, passing through the port and Santa Nicolicchia. Before returning to Palermo, a photo stop is planned at the Capo Zafferano Lighthouse. The return to Palermo is by bicycle along the coastal road.

Location

Tour Plan

We’ll meet up with the participants, set up the bicycles, and depart towards the outskirts of Palermo. The initial route follows the coastline, on a paved road open to vehicular traffic (where possible, we’ll use the bike path).

Before leaving the urban area, we’ll take a break at Parco Libero Grassi, a green space in the city located on the infamous “mammellone,” where the debris from the destruction during the “Sack of Palermo” was disposed of.

Subsequently, we’ll exit the city limits and head east, reaching the Ficarazzi seafront, which will take us to the seaside village of Aspra. Here, we’ll stop to visit the Anchovy and Maritime Arts Museum, a unique place in the Mediterranean that carefully collects maritime art, relics, documents, and tools that tell the story of centuries of traditions related to anchovy salting in Sicily.

After the visit, we’ll get back on our bikes and head to Bagheria, famous for its 19th-century villas. We’ll have the opportunity to visit the renowned Villa Palagonia, known as the Villa of Monsters, the former residence of a necromancer prince whose adventures were also narrated by the German writer Goethe.

In Bagheria, we’ll also have a small tasting of the famous Sfincione Bagherese, a local focaccia with ricotta. Our ride will then take us to the seaside village of Porticello, passing through the harbor and the picturesque Santa Nicolicchia. Before returning to Palermo, we’ll stop at the Capo Zafferano Lighthouse, which protects the entrance to the Gulf of Palermo, for a photo stop.

We’ll return to the city by bicycle along the coastal road.
